From Retirees to Alumni...
The General Motors Alumni Club of Arizona began in 1974 as the GM Retirees Club of AZ, representing all GM divisions and affiliates* worldwide. In 2016 our club, and others around the nation, modified their name from "Retirees" to General Motors Alumni Club. A change to "alumni" expands the scope of membership to include those who have past working ties which do not formally constitute retirement. Regardless of years of service, all members possess rich memories that can lead to lifelong friendships. The Club celebrated 50 wonderful years of existence on March 12, 2024, and made this event its last.
General Motors legacy...
Our affinity for General Motors remains the foundation of our Club. Members value the skills, experience, and livelihood gained from working for a globally dominant corporation. Perhaps most of all, Club members value the opportunity for camaraderie with ladies and gentlemen who share a personal history with General Motors and its affiliates* as they experience what makes Arizona an exceptional place to call home.
Membership demographics...
Most of our members are salaried retirees from all walks of GM ranks but other working ties to GM, short of formal retirement qualify for regular membership. Spouses/significant others participate in all of our events, as do guests who, when sponsored by a member, may become Associate Members. Associate members do not have the requisite past ties to GM, and may not serve as officers, but otherwise enjoy all of the rights and privileges of our Club. Regular members worked at locations around the globe in various roles: engineering, manufacturing, information technology, finance, legal, service and more. Today Arizona is their home, full or part time. Members reside in Prescott to Sedona in the North; Tucson and Green Valley in the South; Scottsdale to Mesa and Gilbert in the East; and Goodyear, Sun City and Wickenburg in the West. As a result, our monthly meetings are held in different venues--some nearer you, some nearer others.
Membership value...
The vast Arizona landscape and exceptional venues leads to a rich activity schedule, November -- April. Annually the event schedule is a mix of day trips** (some via motor coach) and luncheon meetings with special speakers from GM and notables in the community, as well as other entertainment. Through our affinity for General Motors, we enjoy the generosity of local auto dealers who periodically host our meetings and provide product reviews with corporate specialists. Our schedule is posted in advance on the website (See Calendar), shared directly with members via email, at monthly meetings, and our monthly newsletters. (See Calendar, Newsletters, and Partners for more information)
* Affiliates examples include: AC, Allison Engine, Delco, Delphi, EDS, Electro Motive, GMAC, Hughes, MIC and more.
** Group travel for overnight excursions is being evaluated.
